Update: The Most Dangerous New York City Hospitals

Update: The Most Dangerous New York City HospitalsSelecting a hospital for your medical care can be a life or death decision. Recently, a study of our city’s hospitals indicated that many are providing less than average services.

In the rankings, an overwhelming 34 of 41 NYC hospitals received a grade of “C” or lower. What may be more striking data from the rankings is that none of the 41 hospitals received an “A” grade, a decrease of two from the most recent Leapfrog Group’s safety rankings.

The best rankings belonged to the seven hospitals that received “B grades. Of the 34 hospitals that received a grade of “C” or lower, 23 received a “C,” nine received a “D” grade and two, SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Queens, actually received an embarrassing grade of “F.”

The Leapfrog rankings review and examine medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections in calculating grades with the goal of determining a patient’s risk of further injury or infection if they stay at a particular hospital.

Other data released by Leapfrog shows that more than 1,000 patients die each day from preventable hospital errors. Hospitals with a “B” grade had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than hospitals with an “A” grade. Hospitals with a “C” grade had a 35 percent higher risk of avoidable death than hospitals with an “A” grade, a substantial increase in risk.
